Case Study by MWK Architects
Honda Romford

Increasing Showroom Capacity with Minimal Disruption
As businesses grow and customer aspirations change, a building often needs to respond. That change can often be achieved within the existing building envelope.
Our clients approached us wanting to explore how they could improve the motorcycle sales experience in their dealership. Inspired by our reconfiguration of another Honda showroom in their group that we had designed, the client wanted to create a separate motorcycle area within their existing showroom to showcase the Honda motorcycle range. The commissioned us to carry out a Feasibility Study to explore the possibilities within their existing showroom.
Just as in the previous refurbishment, we sought out an innovative, space-efficient solution by reconfiguring the whole of their existing mezzanine while preserving key functional areas and thus minimizing costs.
Project Goals
- Expand showroom capacity to store 50 new and used motorcycles on the first floor.
- Seamlessly integrate a goods lift for effortless transportation of motorbikes.
- Retain the glass-fronted boardroom, the facility’s primary meeting space.
- Reconfigure storage, retail, and workspace areas for maximum efficiency.
- Future-proof the space by planning for a bike-themed café, enhancing customer engagement.
Challenges & Smart Design Solutions
How did we achieve the redesign?
1️. Space Optimization Without Compromise
To create a high-functioning open-plan first floor, our strategy involved:
- Removing redundant office space to open up showroom space.
- Repurposing two of the offices for a changing room and a secure store.
- Relocating the apparel section.
- Integrating helmet, apparel, and gear retail into a sleek back-wall display, enhancing visibility while freeing up floor space.
2️. Enhancing Operational Flow with Smart Logistics
A custom-designed goods lift was introduced to streamline motorcycle transportation between floors, improving workflow and reducing manual handling risks.
3️. Planning for Future Expansion: A Customer-Centric Experience
The oversized staff canteen was identified as a high-potential space for future development into a bike-themed café, aligning with the brand’s goal of creating an immersive showroom experience.
